Hunkeler
Paper processing
Hunkeler's new flagship – the GEN 8 EVO. A holistic concept – optimal usability not just at the HMI. Industrial design with a focus on UX.
Hunkeler Paper Processing is an internationally active company specializing in automated paper processing solutions. It develops and manufactures systems for cutting, folding, and stacking paper in digital print finishing, among other applications.
A machine that anyone can operate – a machine that never stops.

Project description
The new GEN8 EVO from Hunkeler sets new standards in production efficiency. With its robust design and increased speeds, it maximizes production uptime and performance, while efficient operation ensures consistently high end-product quality. The intuitive, ergonomic operation enables faster and error-free adjustments, saving valuable time and increasing flexibility.
Challenges
The development of the industrial design for the Hunkeler GEN8 EVO posed particular challenges, especially regarding UX. The goal was to create a modern and elegant design that not only enhances the visual appeal of the production environment but also emphasizes functionality to ensure optimal performance. An innovative lighting concept was integrated to provide instant feedback on the machine’s operating status, making it easier to monitor and control the production process. These design decisions required a careful balance between aesthetic and functional aspects to maximize both efficiency and user-friendliness.

Our approach
UX Research
Targeted UX research to understand the needs of machine operators and derive a holistic, ergonomic operating concept that significantly improves efficiency and error prevention in daily production.
UX Concept
The UX concept of the GEN8 EVO focuses on a clear design that communicates the HMI operating philosophy through visual status signals using lighting and a well-thought-out ergonomic approach. This enables quick onboarding and ensures safe, efficient interactions during operation.
Industrial Design Concept
Clarity through a modern, minimalist look – every form follows function, while high-quality, partially transparent materials, a continuous design language, and an integrated lighting concept not only support operation but also reinforce the brand identity by referencing the logo’s emblem.
Industrial Design Realization
Precise implementation of design principles: high-quality casing elements, seamless integration of controls and lighting systems, as well as robust, maintenance-friendly constructions that meet both aesthetic demands and industrial practicality—while always keeping cost efficiency in mind!
Prototyping Testing
For the acrylic glass lighting elements, various shapes, milling techniques, and light guide technologies were tested in iterative prototyping and testing phases to ensure uniform illumination, optimal visibility, and seamless integration into the overall design.
Construction Support
To ensure that the developed design retains its full impact in the final construction, we supported the engineers throughout the implementation process and provided guidance on durability, cost reduction, and assembly.
Cooperation
The work carried out for Hunkeler on our UX concept in the field of industrial design was developed in collaboration with our partner Kim Clayton Weiler from Neow Design.
