Project description

The software “MR.KNOW” is a web-based Business Process Management (BPM) solution by Inspire Technologies GmbH that includes multiple sub-applications and access points. The tool enables, among other things, BPMN 2.0 modeling, no-/low-code development, digital assistants, automation, and interface/portal functions.

In the project with Alphagate, the goal was to completely redesign the existing visual appearance of the software – including its various modules and access points – to create a consistent overall experience. In addition to the UI/UX redesign, the aim was to establish a cohesive visual and communicative identity that runs through all applications and user interfaces. A central element of this effort was the creation of the character “Mr. Know”, designed to serve as a recognizable brand and user experience element.

Tasks of Alphagate

  • Corporate and Application Design:
Development of a new visual identity for MR.KNOW – including color, typography, and icon systems – to ensure consistent use across all sub-applications.
  • UX Concept Development:
Analysis of the existing user flow and creation of a new UX concept that presents the extensive functionalities of the BPM software in the most simple, intuitive, and comprehensible way possible.
  • UI Redesign:
Implementation of the UX concept into UI components – e.g., for the dashboard, modeler, assistants, and process board – including a comprehensive style guide and component library.
  • Development of the Brand Character “Mr Know”:
Concept and design of the lead character “Mr. Know” – from character design and various poses/states to its application as an icon, pictogram, or illustration within the software and marketing materials.
  • Harmonization of Access Points/Modules:
Ensuring that all different access points and applications (e.g., web portal, modeling tool, process board, assistants) share a consistent visual and functional language under the new design system.
  • Documentation & Handover:
Creation of a style guide, component library, and UI kit, followed by handover to Inspire Technologies’ development team for integration and further development.
„An exciting challenge: making complex functions clear, intuitive, and playful to experience.“

Katrin Greber, Senior UX Designer, Alphagate

Challenges

  • Heterogeneous Module System:
The software consists of numerous modules and access points that were originally not fully harmonized, either visually or functionally. The goal was to create a unified brand and user experience despite this diversity.
  • Complexity of Functionalities:
MR.KNOW offers a wide range of features – BPMN modeling, automation, assistants, monitoring, and low/no-code development. This complexity had to be made visually and structurally comprehensible in the UX design, without losing depth.
  • Branding Plus Product Interface:
The project required not only a brand redesign but also the direct implementation of this brand identity within the software UI itself – meaning that aesthetic and ergonomic requirements had to be closely intertwined.
  • User Groups with Different Levels of Experience:
The users range from business professionals and process managers to citizen developers. The UX/UI therefore had to be intuitive and accessible for both experts and occasional users.
  • Technical Integration:
Once the design concept was developed, it had to be ensured that it could be technically implemented within Inspire’s existing web applications – for example, through the component library, responsive web design, and performance requirements.
  • Brand Character as Part of the Software Experience:
The development of “Mr. Know” meant that the character should not only appear in marketing materials but also be integrated into the UI/UX environment itself (e.g., assistance, onboarding, animations) – with consistent design and usability in mind.

Results

Through the collaboration, a cohesive and consistent visual identity for MR.KNOW was established — one that strengthens the brand identity while improving user guidance. The new lead character “Mr. Know” serves as a unifying visual element and makes the extensive software functionality more accessible. The new UI/UX approach helps users become productive more quickly and supports the tool’s stronger positioning in the market.
